HMS Courageous was built as a large light cruiser with 4-15" guns, completing in the midst of World War I. She was reconstructed as an aircraft carrier in the 1920s to avoid scrapping under the Washington Naval Treaties. She was sunk by a German U-boat only two weeks after the start of World War II.
