- Service: Courageous was built as a light battlecruiser (4-15in, 18-4in). She served with 1st CS of the Grand Fleet, 1917-1918. Converted to an aircraft carrier, 1924-28 at Devonport Dockyard. Assigned to Home fleet in 1939, she was sunk just two weeks into World War II by two torpedoes from German submarine U-29 in the Western Approaches, 17 Sep 1939. Sank in 15 minutes with the loss of over 500 of her crew.
