- Service: Sep 1939 refitting. Jan 1940-Apr 1943 1st CS Home Fleet. Bdaly damaged by German aircraft off Stavanger, Norway 17 Apr 1940. Repairs and refitting May 1940-Mar 1941. Located and shadowed German battleship Bismarck 23 May 1941 in company with HMS Norfolk, setting up the Battle of the Denmark Strait on 24 May in which HMS Hood was sunk. Continued shadowing, but lost her quarry 25 May and was not present at the end when Bismarck was sunk on 27 May. Refit Apr-Jul 1942. 4th CS Eastern Fleet May 1943-Jun 1944. 5th CS Jan-Jul 1945, East Indies Command. Aug 1945-Mar 1946 trooping duties. Scrapped at Newport from Jun 1948.
