Notes: Built as fleet Collier No.3, later AC-3, Jupiter. First USN ship with turbo-electric drive. Conversion to aircraft carrier authorized in 1919 and carried out at Norfolk Navy Yard starting in Mar 1920. Commissioned as CV-1 Langley in 1922. Converted to seaplane tender 1936-37, with forward deck cut down. Recommissioned as AV-3 Langley on 21 Apr 1937. Hit and sunk by Japanese high-level bombers 27 Feb 1942 south of Chilachap while attempting to deliver 32 P-40s for the Java defences.
Sister Cyclops (AC-4) with 306 crew and passengers was lost without a trace sometime after 4 Mar 1918 while carrying a cargo of manganese ore from Brazil to Baltimore. Two other sisters, Proteus (AC-9) and Nereus (AC-10) were also lost without a trace in 1941 after they had been sold into mercantile service; both were carrying ore loads at the time of loss. No German U-boat claims were made for any of the three.
