Strasbourg was present at Mers-el-Kebir on 3 July 1940 when a British ultimatum was refused and Force "H", including HMS Resolution, fired on the French ships. Strasbourg escaped the British fire and sailed into the open sea, arriving at Toulon the next day despite attacks by British carrier aircraft.
