Battle of Midway, 4 June 1942. At 0825, submarine USS Nautilus attacked the Japanese battleship Kirishima, part of the screen for the aircraft carriers of V.Adm. Nagumo's First Mobile Force. One torpedo missed and a second malfunctioned. The light cruiser Nagara counterattacked, forcing the submarine deep. Destroyer Arashi moved in to hunt the submarine, while the task force sailed on. Eventually she gave up the search and rushed off to rejoin the carriers. Inadvertently, she led the dive bombers from USS Enterprise under Cdr. McCluskey to their targets, where they proceded to sink aircraft carriers Akagi and Kaga.
