Arandora Star was torpedoed off Ireland on 2 July 1940 by
U-47 under command of the legendary Gunther Prien.
Unkown to Prien, some 1178 German and Italian internees and POWs were
on board, along with an armed guard of 254 and crew of 176. A total of
805 lives were lost.
