- Actions: Pacific raids 1944-45. Received SCB-27C and SCB-125 modernizations in 1952-54 giving her an angled flight deck, twin steam catapults, and overhauls of elevators and arresting gear. Deployed to the Pacific Fleet and Far East 1956-1960, then to the Atlantic and Mediterranean 1961-1970. Redesignated an antisubmarine warfare carrier (CVS-38) in 1969. Returned to the Pacific in 1970 and launched combat sorties over Vietnam from Yankee Station. Returned to Boston for inactivation in 1971. She earned two battle stars for World War II service and three battle stars for the Vietnam War.
