- Service:Built as a steamer for the Fall River Line in 1907. Purchased by the Navy as SS Massachusetts from Eastern Steamship Co. in 1917. Renamed USS Shawmut 7 Jan 1918. Played an active role in World War I, departing Hampton Roads for Inverness Scotland in Jun 1918 to help to lay the North Sea Mine Barrage, Converted to an aviation tender postwar, operating with the naval air arm in the early 1920s. Renamed USS Oglala 1 Jan 1928 and became flagship of Mine Division One. On 7 Dec 1941 she was berthed alongside USS Helena at Pearl Harbor, when the latter was torpedoed causing Oglala to capsize and sink. Refloated in 1942, she steamed to California for more extensive repairs. She was redesignated ARG-1, a gasoline engine repair ship, on 21 May 1943. Reported for duty in the Central Pacific in 1944 and carried out repair work to war's end. Decommissioned in 1946 and transferred to the Maritime
Commission.
