- Notes: Design based on German cruiser type of submarine. Launched as No. 74 but completed as I-1. Rearmed with Type '95' oxygen-driven torpedoes in 1939. Modified to act as transport submarine in 1942. Wrecked 29 Jan 1943 in Kamimbo Bay, Guadalcanal, after being heavily damaged by the New Zealand corvettes Kiwi and Moa and driven ashore.
