- Notes: An experimental design trying for maximum armament on a light hull, with armor carrying part of the internal strength. On outbreak of war served as leader of the 6th Destroyer Flotilla in the South Seas Force. Part of both the initial failed assault and second successful assault on Wake Island Dec 1941. Covered landings at Lae on the Huon Gulf in Mar 1942 and led the forces intended to invade Port Moresby during the Battle of the Coral Sea in May. Present at the Battle of Savo Island 9 Aug 1942 where Allied cruisers Canberra, Astoria, Quincy, and Vincennes were sunk. Led a force to shell and occupy Nauru and Ocean Islands later that month. Continued in the Solomon Islands campaign during 1943, being slightly damaged at Rabaul during carrier raid in Nov 1943. Finally torpedoed and sunk 27 Apr 1944 by submarine Bluegill off Palau.
