Requisitioned for war service 31 Aug 1939 as armed merchant cruiser as shown here. Released 16 Feb 1944 for conversion to troopship for MoWT with service starting 16 Dec 1944. Returned to owners 1946. First postwar voyage 31 May 1947 Liverpool-Bombay. Sold 1965 to Stichting Vakopleiding Havenbedrief, Rotterdam. Refitted 1966 at the Veroline shipyard as a stationary training ship; renamed Jan Backx. Shipping school at Parkhaven. Sistership Circassia also served as AMC, troopship, and LSI(L) during war.
