- Service: One of a group of coastal submarines commonly referred to as "ducks." North Sea patrols 1939-40 under Otto Kretschmer sank 6.5 ships for 20,000 tons, including British destroyer HMS Daring on 18 Feb 1940. Served for a while in the Baltic as a school boat. In 1942, along with 5 sister submarines, she was decommissioned, disassembled, and transported by rail and barge to Galati, Romania, on the Black Sea. There they were reassembled and recommissioned for use against the Soviets. Operated out of Constanza. Scuttled 10 Sep 1944 off Turkish Coast.
