Battle of Empress Augusta Bay, 2 November 1943. American forces invaded the west coast of Bougainville near Cape Torokina on 1 November. Cover for the landings was provided by Adm Merrill's TF39, including the first four Cleveland-class light cruisers: Cleveland, Columbia, Montpelier, and Denver, and 8 destroyers. A Japanese cruiser destroyer force sortied from Rabaul to attack the Americans, including heavy cruisers Myoko and Haguro, light cruisers Agano and Sendai, and six destroyers. In the ensuing battle, Sendai and destroyer Hatsukaze were sunk and several other ships damaged on the Japanese side, with little damage to the Americans.
