Fuscus, given command of Domitian's army on the basis of his extensive military background, moved his strike force across the Danube and into the hills in pursuit of Decebalus. Two legions, the cohorts of Praetorians, and numerous auxiliary units made up Fuscus' army facing the Dacians. At the point of contact with Decebalus' forces, Fuscus' military skills deserted him as his Roman army was decimated. The 5th Auladae Legion along with the Praetorians were so overwhelmed that they lost their imperial eagles. The 5th Auladae Legion disappears from Roman records at this point. Fuscus and the majority of the Romans lost their lives.
