In 106 AD Emperor Trajan annexed the desert kingdom of the Nabateans. He made them a client state of Rome protecting his right flank in is war with the Parthian Empire. Here records begin regarding the Roman Camel Corps or Dromedarii. It is generally believed that these camel cavalry units were Auxila regiments. The main base for these units ws the desert city of Palmyra, now in modern day Syria.
