Edward the Black Prince
1330-1376
(St. Petersburg Collection 5189)
Edward, the Prince of Wales, son of King Edward III of England, caught the fancy of the English people almost from the time of his birth. Nothing the Prince would ever do in his forty-six years of life would diminish his favor with the English people. A brave and brilliant warrior, Edward, called the Black Prince, defeated the superior-in-number French forces at Poitiers and captured King Jean II of France. Sadly this intrepid medieval commander and future king died of fever before he could ascend the English throne.
