Ii Naotaka
1590 - 1659
(St. Petersburg Collection 3571)
Some of the fiercest warriors in the armies of Tokugawa Ieyasu were the red lacquered samurai of the Ii clan led by Ii Naotaka. Naotaka was an unlikely leader of the Ii family as he was an illegitimate son of Ii Naomasa one of Tokugawa's most trusted generals. When Naomasa died in 1602 his incompetent eldest son Naokatsu was placed at the head of the Ii clan.
The war with Osaka changed this when Naokatsu refused to fight. Tokugawa inserted Naotaka into the leadership of the Ii family because of his service during the Osaka campaign. Naotaka distinguished himself and his clan especially at the Battle of Tennoji where his 'red devils' were pivotal in defeating their Osaka enemies. He was awarded Hikone castle for his service and he lived there till his death in 1659.
