According to Stephen Turnbull, "When Hideyosi presented Ieyasu with the Hojo's former territories of the Kanto area as a reward for his services in the siege of Odawara, he made a joke that the rural nature of the gift would make Ieyasu 'the cow of the Kanto.' With hindsight this was particularly ironic as the Kanto plain has since become metropolitan Tokyo. Ieyasu had this armor made as a return jest. It is a simple okegawa-do style, covered all over with cow hair and sporting a fine pair of horns. The lacquered face mask provides a contrast to the overall design."
