Pausanias, King of the Spartans
479 BC
(St. Petersburg Collection 3309)
Born in 510 BC to Cleombrotus, youngest full brother of Spartan King Leonidas, Pausanias was brought up as a Spartan warrior prince. Subsequent to the death of Leonidas at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, Pausanias was named regent for Leonidas' young son Pleistrachus, a duty he would hold for a decade.
Pausanias displayed his military prowess as well as his generalship as commander of the combined Greek forces at Plataea in 479 BC where the Persians were decisively defeated.
