The Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Britain served as a troopship from late 1939. She was attacked by a German Focke-Wulf Condor off the Irish coast and set afire on 2 October 1940. Polish destroyer ORP Burza participated in the rescue of survivors from the damaged ship. The Empress of Britain was sunk two days later by German submarine U-32.
