Quiz #80
German light cruiser SMS Emden detached from Admiral Graf von Spee's Pacific squadron to raid independently in the Indian Ocean. In a few months she sank 16 British steamers, a Russian light cruiser and a French destroyer. While she was attacking the cable and wireless station on Direction Island on 9 Nov 1914, the Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney was nearby escorting the ANZAC convoy to Suez. Responding quickly, the Sydney with her 6in main armament caught up with the Emden and shelled her to destruction while staying outside the range of the latter's 4in guns.
