Quiz #8
Battle of Cape Matapan, 28-29 March 1941. Italian forces including the battleship Vittorio Veneto, eight cruisers and a number of destroyers headed for Greece to interfere with British convoys, while British battleships Warspite, Valiant, and Barham, aircraft carrier Formidable, and additional light forces sortied to counter the move. In a back and forth action, both sides' light forces came under fire, but without damage. British Swordfish managed one torpedo hit on Vittorio Veneto, which only slowed her down but did not prevent her escape, and one on cruiser Pola which was stopped. The British battleships came upon her and sisters Zara and Fiume, which had come to her aid, and sank all three cruisers along with two destroyers.
