- Notes: Originally the conventional fleet destroyer DD-712, she was the third US Navy ship to carry guided missiles, after conversion at the Boston Naval Shipyard. It was an austere conversion, with minimal radar, to test whether a destroyer-size vessel could carry such missiles. Conversion also installed British Denny-Brown retractable fin stabilizers, the first stabilization system in a US warship. Redesignated DDG-1 on 1 Dec 1955, then DDG-712 on 30 Dec 1956, back to DDG-1 on 21 May 1957, and to DD-712 on 1 Oct 1962 after removal of her missile system. She served as a test and evaluation ship for the remainder of her career.
