- Service: Third U.S. nuclear-powered surface warship. Participated in Operation Sea Orbit with USS Enterprise (CVAN-65) and USS Long Beach (CGN-9), a round-the-world unrefueled cruise by the first all-nuclear-powered task force. Served multiple combat tours off Viet Nam from 1966-73. Extensive modernization and refueling 1974-76. Classification changed to CGN-25 on 30 Jun 1975. Continued Pacific and Indian Ocean operations to 1983, followed by another overhaul and refueling. Moved to Atlantic in 1986 and made four Mediterranean cruises, including combat operations off Libya in 1991-92 and United Nations sanctions against Yugoslavia in 1994.
