- Notes: One of seven icebreakers -- two built for the Navy and the remaining five to Coast Guard specifications. Three of the latter served with the Soviet Navy postwar for five years, including an earlier Northwind renamed Severni Veter when in Soviet service, and then AGB-5 Staten Island when returned to the Navy. Later transferred to the Coast Guard and redesignated WAGB-278. The present Northwind (II) served solely with the Coast Guard from her commissioning to retirement in 1989. Her sister Westwind also remained in service to 1989, the others having been laid up in the 1970s.
