Converted in 1960 to an oceanographic research ship at Philadelphia Navy Yard for Operation Sea Scan and redesignated AGSS 22 Feb. Manned by a special bachelor crew, including civilians, she spent 65% of her time underway surveying vast areas of the oceans -- first the North Atlantic and Arctic, then the Western Pacific, Eastern Pacific, and finally around Australia. Expended as a torpedo target for SSN 592 Snook 19 Oct 1968 off California.
