- Actions: Laid down as Vicksburg; renamed Houston 12 Oct 1942. Joined TG58.4 for the invasion of the Marianas Jun 1944. Transferred to TG 38.2 for invasion of Palau in Aug. Joined TG 38.1 for raid on Formosa during which she was torpedoed 14 Oct 1944 and disabled. Torpedoed a second time on 16 Oct while under tow. Made Ulithi 27 Oct for temporary repairs, then to Marcus Island where engines were repaired sufficiently for her to sail to New York Navy Yard in Feb 1945 for permanent repairs, which lasted to Oct 1945 after the war ended. She recdeived three battle stars for her WW2 service.
