- Actions: Kwajalein, Truk raid, Hollandia, Marianas, Palau, Leyte Gulf, Okinawa, Pacific raids 1944-45. Korea 1952. Modernized in early 1980s with addition of 16 Harpoon (in 4 quad canisters), 32 Tomahawk cruise missiles (in 8 armored box launchers), and 4 Phalanx antimissile CIWS, while secondary battery reduced to 12-5"/38, similar to sister Wisconsin. Persian Gulf 1987-88. On 19 Apr 1989 while in the Caribbean, she suffered an explosion in the center gun of No. 2 turret, killing 47 men. Complete repair of the turret was not carried out. Now a memorial in Los Angeles.
