- Notes: Built 1918-19 as SS Mehanno for the U.S. Shipping Board. In reserve Apr 1922 to 19 Jan 1940. Service Force, Atlantic Fleet 1940-41 with multiple voyages to US bases in West Indies; 22-23 Jan 1942 suffered machinery breakdown on voyage to Iceland; missed by U-boat torpedo but escorting USCG cutter Alexander Hamilton hit and later sank. Repaired in US with additional armament added as shown here. Yukon made further voyages in Atlantic; badly damaged in collision 23 Jul 1943; repaired in Boston; Jul-Aug 1944 voyage to Mediterranean; bows badly damaged 22 Sep 1944 by U-boat torpedo near Reykjavik; repaired Norfolk. Mar 1945 to Pearl Harbor and then beyond to Ulithi, New Zealand and Samar. Early 1946 departure from Pearl Harbor for Norfolk where she decommissioned.
