- Service: Begun as the light cruiser Admiral Lazarev, one of six authorized before World War I - three Svetlana class for the Baltic and three Admiral Nakhimov for the Black Sea. Work suspended when 63% complete due to Brest-Litovsk Treaty 1917 and Russian Revolution. Restarted in 1927 and completed in 1932 with capacity for two aircraft, later dropped in favor of greater AA firepower. Made a rare foreign cruise to the Mediterranean in 1933. At the outbreak of war in Jun 1941 she helped lay defensive minefields off Sevastopol, then later supported the defense and eventual evacuation of Odessa. Supported defense of the Crimea and counterlanding at Feodosia in Dec 1941. Bombed and damaged by Stukas on 4 Jan 1942, she managed to make Tuapse and then Poti for repairs which took until Aug, after which she recommenced troop transport duties. In 1943 she participated in more landing operations, but after three destroyers were sunk on 6 Oct, she and other major units were withdrawn to safer waters. Refitted in 1944 and returned to Sevastopol in May 1945. Reclassified as a training cruiser in 1947 she remained in the Black Sea until paid off in 1954. Expended as missile target in Jun 1955.
