Served as seagoing training ship; Nonintervention Patrol during Spanish Civil War; 29 May 1937 bombed by Spanish government aircraft; 24 Aug 1939 sent to Atlantic before outbreak of WW2 for raiding -- destroyed 2 ships of 6,902 tons; Nov 1939 returned to Germany for overhaul; renamed Lützow Feb 1940 to avoid embarrassment of losing a ship named after the nation if she were sunk; Apr 1940 Norwegian campaign and service in Norwegian waters; torpedoed by British submarine Spearfish 11 Apr 1940 in Skagerrak while returning from landing troops at Oslo; repairs required one year; 31 Dec 1942 with Hipper in attack on Arctic convoy in Battle of Barents Sea; 1944 Training Squadron in Baltic and later supporting army; 16 Apr 1945 bombed and badly damaged at Swinemunde; 4 May 1945 blown up and scuttled.
