- Service: Enlarged copy of Brazilian Riachuelo of 1893. Originally bark-rigged with three masts, but mizzenmast removed 1892. Completion delayed by nondelivery of armor. Originally classified as armored cruiser ACR-1. Sunk in Havana harbor by two explosions in forward part of the vessel, 15 Feb 1898. Although investigation concluded cause was a submarine mine, it is probable the explosions were internal. Her destruction precipitated the Spanish-American War of 1898. Raised 2 Feb 1912 and sunk at sea, 16 Mar 1912.
