- Notes: The 6" side armor was inclined outwards and joined the turtle deck, with the knuckle backed by 45" of timber; the hull was nominally 5-6' above water, but was lowered 6" for action by water ballast. Only in commission up to Apr 1897 and again from Mar to Oct 1898.
Designated Ballistic Experimental Target A and sunk as gunnery target at Rappahannock Spit, VA, Sep 1909. These firing trials determined the need for 13.5" armor in future battleship design.
