- Notes: One of the first steel ships of the "New Navy" along with sistership Boston and cruiser Chicago. Assigned to North Atlantic Squadron, 1887, and cruised along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts and West Indies. Reassigned to the Squadron of Evolution, 1889, for trips to Europe and Mediterranean, and South America. Transferred back to North Atlantic Squadron in 1892. Laid up at New York 1895. Recommissioned in 1900 and sailed in Caribbean and South American waters. Used for training midshipman and then as barracks ship at Norfolk 1905-09, and later at Charleston 1909-12. Stricken and sold 1912.
