- Notes: First ironclad warship built without rigging or sails. One of three experimental ironclads ordered in 1861. Designed by John Ericsson. Spindle-type turret built by Novelty Iron Works on iron hull (126' x 34') with overhanging armored deck. Hurried to completion and towed to Hampton Roads with workmen still aboard.
- Service: Engaged CSS Virginia at Hampton Roads, Va., in first battle between ironclads, 9 Mar 1862. Engaged battery at Sewells Point, 8 May, and at Drewry's Bluff, 15 May. Engagement with CSS Teaser in James River, 4 Jul. Foundered in gale off Cape Hatteras while under tow of USS Rhode Island, 31 Dec 1862.
