- Service: Fuso and sister Yamashiro were the first battleships built in Japan to use both Japanese material and weapons. Fuso and Yamashiro were both rebuilt during 1930s, including lengthening of forecastle, addition of torpedo blisters, pagoda masts, new oil-burning boilers, increased power and speed, forward funnel deleted. Alterations were sufficient in Fuso to require her third turret to be trained forward. They saw little action during World War II prior to being sunk at Surigao Strait 25 Oct 1944 in a night action with US battleships, cruisers, and destroyers by gunfire and torpedoes.
