- Notes: A revolutionary design, the first mastless, sea-going turret ship. Controversial at first, Devastation proved to be a steady gun platform and a good steamer. Although subject to being washed down in a seaway, she was a good seaboat and rolled and pitched less than many broadside ironclads. Sister Thunderer was delayed in construction until Devastation proved herself on trials. Refitted in 1879 and modernized in 1890-92; sold for breakup in 1908.
