Greek Trireme
500 BC
(Johann Wolkersdorfer JW-12)
- Type: Trireme
- Displacement: 45 tons
- Dimensions: 120 x 20 ft.
- Notes: The trireme had an increased number of rowers, as a balance between speed and impetus when ramming an opponent. This was achieved by erecting an additional row of benches. The oars were free and the rowers were protected by shields while soldiers stood in the middle. The ram was S-shaped to penetrate deeply in the target ship. A fish tail adorns the stern.
