- Service: Built for Italian Line. Maiden voyage 12 May 1965, Genoa-New York service. Initially suffered from severe vibrations. Withdrawn for repairs in Aug; redesigned propellers cured the problem and increased her speed. Resumed service Feb 1966. On 12 Apr she was struck by a rogue wave that smashed forward windows and killed three, with 20 cabins wrecked and dozens flooded. Refitted 1973 with accommodations for 843 first class and 770 tourist. Laid up, 1975-77. Sold to Iranian government, 1977, and became a barracks ship at Bandar Abbas. Scrapped in Pakistan, 1991. Sister Raffaele had a similar history, including sale to Iran; she was bombed and scuttled during the Iran-Iraq war in 1982 and gradually scrapped in situ.
