- Service: Italian Line flagship. Largest Italian liner built since the 1930s. Used on Naples-Genoa-New York service with maiden voyage 14 Jan 1953. Bound for New York in dense fog on 25 July 1956, she was rammed amidships by Swedish liner Stockholm off Nantucket. A 40 ft gash, 30 ft deep, was cut in her starboard side and she quickly developed a 25° list. Ten hours and 40 minutes later, she rolled over and sank next day. With calm seas and clearing weather, the bulk of the 1,134 passengers and 572 crew were rescued, while 46 perished. Extensive litigation followed, the owners each seeking to blame the other vessel for the collision.
