Maiden voyage 3 Nov 1951 Liverpool-Lagos. Established bi-weekly service in conjunction with Accra and Apapa. Officially inaugurated Queen Elizabeth II Quay at Freetown in 1954. First mail liner to berth at Takoradi Passenger Terminal in 1964. Converted to single-class service in 1968 with 451 berths. Homeport changed to Southampton 1972. Laid up 21 Oct 1974 after 203 round trips. Sold 1975 to Marianna Shipping & Trading Co, Panama; renamed Marianna VI and sent to Jeddah as an accommodation ship. Overhauled and refurbished at Piraeus in 1979, then berthed at Rabegh as an accommodation ship in 1980. Laid up off Piraeus in 1990.
