- Service: Tapanoeli was one of four sisters built for the Rotterdamsche Lloyd Line (Dutch flag). Rotterdam-East Indies service. At Batavia in May 1940, she was placed on the Java-New York service. Chartered to MOWT in Aug 1940. Inbound Batavia-Glasgow torpedoed 17 Mar 1941 off the Cape Verde Islands by U106. All 75 saved. Sister Kertosono captured by German raider Thor off Cape Verde Islands 1 Jul 1940 and sailed to Lorient; later converted to submarine depot ship. Sister Blitar sunk by U632 in North Atlantic 5 Apr 1943. Sister Soekaboemi torpedoed 27 Dec 1942 by U356 and abandoned; finally sunk by second torpedo from U441.
