- Service: Spaarndam (II) was the last of four sisters built for Holland America Line, following Maasdam (III), Leerdam (II), and Edam (IV). Maiden voyage to Mexico, 11 Jan 1922. All originally had two funnels. Spaarndam was the first to be laid up in 1934 and rebuilt with a single funnel, as shown here. First sailing to New York 23 Oct 1934. Last sailing New York-Rotterdam 18 Sep 1939. Enroute Rotterdam-New York as a neutral, she stopped in the Thames estuary to pass British contraband control 27 Nov 1939. Triggered a German magnetic mine (laid by air), caught fire and sank.
