- Service: Deutschland built for the Hamburg-America Line (HAPAG); became fastest passenger ship afloat, 1900-06. Took the Blue Riband on her maiden voyage in Jul 1900 at 22.42 knots and improved on it repeatedly thereafter. Lost her rudder in severe weather while homeward bound in Apr 1902 but completed voyage under steam; repared at Blohm & Voss, Hamburg and returned to service 1902. Mechanically troublesome, suffering severe vibrations from her powerful engines. Rebuilt 1910-11 as the all-first-class cruise ship Victoria Luise, painted entirely white. Unused in Germany during First World War, but rebuilt as the immigration ship Hansa, 1921.
