- Notes: The port cities of Hastings, Dover, Romney, Hythe and Sandwich joined together in the 12th Century under the name "Cinque Ports". This union had the task to make ships and sailors available at the King's need. In turn these cities received certain privileges. The ships of this period are shown in the city seals. Dover shows a late form Nef, with castles built out over the ends, a bowsprit, and steering rudder to port.
