- Notes: An improved version of the Hawker Typhoon sufficiently distinct to earn a new name. There were Mks. I, II, and V, but only the latter saw action before the end of the war in Europe, with 805 produced. Like the Typhoon, the Tempest was an excellent ground attack aircraft. However, its extra speed made it the first line of defence against the German V-1 flying bombs over southern England and the Channel, disposing of 638 in the period June-September 1944. Tempests were also credited with destroying 20 Me 262 jet fighters.
