The 334th Fifghter Squadron was constituted by the U.S. War Department on August 22, 1942. It was then activated on September 12. Also activated were the 335th and 336th Swqaudrons, known as Eagle Squadrons. Fomerly made up of American volunteers in the RAF, the 334th was the first Army Air Forces unit activated in the European Theater of Operations.
