By the ninth century the ranks of the Tagmata had grown to 6000 soldiers and 6000 auxiliaries and were stationed in several locations within the empire. For many years the Tagmata figured largely in the campaigns to recover lands lost to the Arabs and Bulgarians.
By the later half of the eleventh century the Tagmata had become neglected and by the end of the reign of Alexius Komnenos (1081-1118 AD) the Tagmata were dissolved.
