Robert the Bruce's title as well as the independence of Scotland was declared invalid by England's Edward I thus igniting the Scottish Wars.
At the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, Bruce's Scottish army of 7500 defeated an English army of twice the size. The Scottish victory over English forces gave confirmation to Bruce's accession to the throne of Scotland and served as an affirmation of the ineptness of England's new ruler Edward II.
Robert the Bruce died at Cardross in 1329 possibly of leprosy.
